Magnesium alloy hot forming characteristics

The formability of magnesium alloy under hot condition is much better than that under cold condition. Therefore, most of the workpiece forming in the hot state, forming method and heating equipment is also the same as aluminum, copper and other alloys, of course, the tools and process parameters are different.

Magnesium alloy slats can form quite complex workpieces in one stretch at high temperature without annealing. Therefore, the process is less, the forming time is short, the labor mold is also simple, the workpiece rebound is small, the forming does not need to shape, the workpiece size deviation is much smaller than the cold forming, the mechanical properties will not decrease.

The linear expansion coefficient of magnesium and its alloys is much larger than that of iron, so this difference must be taken into account when magnesium alloys are formed with steel or casting die to ensure dimensional stability. However, the linear expansion coefficient of magnesium alloy is not different from that of aluminum alloy and zinc alloy, so the size coefficient can not be modified when the two kinds of alloy die is formed.

Forming heating, should make some processing, remove all foreign material on the surface, mold, punch, etc., should also be clean, available solvent cleaning tools. Heating forming slab and forming die are heated, heating equipment: heating plate, heating furnace, electric heater, heat transfer liquid, induction heater, bulb and other infrared heaters.

The temperature should be strictly controlled during hot forming of magnesium alloys. When producing a small number of parts, a contact thermometer can be used to monitor the temperature. When forming in batches, it should be automatically controlled so as to control the temperature more accurately.

Lubrication in hot forming is more important than in cold forming because magnesium alloy materials are more susceptible to surface damage in the hot state. The choice of lubricant is mainly determined by the forming temperature. The available lubricants are: mineral oil, animal oil, grease, soap, wax, two-fluidized molybdenum, colloidal graphite, tissue paper and glass fiber.
